Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions

What is Veritas?
Veritas is an organization that partners with schools to train coaches and debaters and holds tournaments for middle and high school students. We were started in 2024 and have successfully run 7 tournaments for hundreds of students.
What is the format of Veritas debates?
It is team debate, with 3 people per team, using a modified World Schools Debate format.
How many tournaments do you have a year?
We have four main tournaments and then an invitation-only tournament for the Veritas Championship, held at AUC.
What is the structure of a tournament day?
Each team, regardless of record, will debate 3 times, on both sides of the motion. We recognize all students individually in the awards by providing certificates of participation. Additionally, we recognize the top teams and top individual performers.
When are the topics for the tournament announced?
Around 1 month prior to the tournament. In the past we have had topics covering tourism, community service, music sharing on the internet, and education.
What are the requirements for a school to join?
Schools should schedule an introductory call with Veritas by emailing info@veritasdebateleague.com or contacting us through the contact page. After that, the school will need to provide teachers or administrators who can complete Veritas training for each 3-person team registered from the school.
Who are the judges?
All judges have completed our training course and undergone a rigorous interview prior to certification. We have both team coaches, who are blocked from judging their teams, and independent community adjudicators.
Who can participate in Veritas debate events?
Veritas tournaments are open to both middle school and high school students, with event formats designed to support school debaters at different levels of experience.
